Scotland Loves Anime 2011

Scotland Loves Anime is back! After an enormously successful film festival in 2010, Scotland Loves Anime 2011 promises to be even bigger and better. The film lineup is hot from Japan – you’ll be seeing many of these films at the same time as Japanese audiences. In fact, we’re even ahead of the game with some: Letter to Momo will not hit Japanese cinemas until April 2012, but you can see it here in Scotland this month.

It’s not just films to see at Scotland Loves Anime. We’ve assembled an array of acclaimed guests from around the world to introduce the films, give talks, engage in question and answer sessions with audiences, and to run workshops for students and graduates. To end the festival with a bang, we’ll get all the guests under the same roof to make their top picks from some of the freshest anime films out there.

Check out the full line-up for both cities below, along with more info on the Scotland Loves Anime guests. Then pick up your tickets here!

Judges’ Category

One of the best bits of going to see a film is sharing opinions afterwards with the people you went to see it with. Imagine the conversation a group of animators, directors, and writers would have after the show – that’s the Judges’ Category.

The Scotland Loves Anime 2011 judges will be tasked with selecting their top pick from four of the headline films through a series of talks and panels. Will their favourites match yours?

Competing for the seal of approval from our guests are:
- Letter to Momo (UK Premiere)
- Hotarubi no Mori E (UK Premiere)
- Mardock Scramble Parts 1 and 2 (Scottish Premiere/EU Premiere)
- Colorful (UK Premiere)

The Scotland Loves Anime judges are:
- Merlin Crossingham, Creative Director for Wallace and Gromit (Aardman Animation)
- Jonathan Clements, Author of Schoolgirl Milky Crisis and The Anime Encylopedia (Muramasa Industries)
- Iain Gardner, Winner of the Celtic Media Awards Best Animation 2011 (Iain Gardner Animation)
- Chris Fell, Festival Director (Leeds Film Festival)
- Luca Della Casa, Asian Coordinator (Future Film Festival)

Guests

Ryosuke Takahashi

Ryosuke Takahashi is the director and original creator of the Votoms universe. His work, partnered with that of character designer Norio Shioyama, epitomizes much of Sunrise’s pivotal work from the 1980s. Takahashi pioneered the real robot genre with works like Armored Troop Votoms and Fang of the Sun Dougram. More recently he has worked on Gasaraki, Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto and FLAG.

Takahashi will be taking part in a Q+A after his film screening as well as a free session on the morning of Sunday 16th to discuss his intimate knowledge of Japanese animation.

Shunsuke Oiji
We are also pleased to welcome one of Sunrise’s planning producers, Shunsuke Oiji, who was involved in planning for both Armored Troop Votoms: Pailsen Files and is the Associate Producer for Colorful. Oiji will contribute to the Q+A after the Votoms film alongside Takahashi. These two admired guests will attend the Edinburgh weekend of Scotland Loves Anime.

Yumi Sato
Yumi Sato is an animation producer for the acclaimed Brain’s Base studio, responsible for titles such as Durarara!!, Baccano!, Natsume’s Book of Friends, and Kuragehime. Sato will fly in from Japan to share insight into Brain’s Base’s original fairytale film, Hotarubi no Mori E, which will screen in both cities at Scotland Loves Anime.

Shuko Yokoyama
Aniplex producer Yokoyama has worked on a number of projects with Sato including Durarara!!, Baccano!, and Natsume’s Book of Friends. She’s been involved with a number of other very well-received anime projects too: Kimi to Boku and Soranowoto to name a couple. Both Yokoyama and Sato will attend the Glasgow weekend of Scotland Loves Animation.

Merlin Crossingham
Currently the creative Director of Wallace and Gromit, Crossingham has been at Aardman as a stop motion animator and a director since 1997. He has worked on Morph, feature films including Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Ware Rabbit, as well as a host of other creative and commercial projects.
